Riverfront devastation at Bonnefin Road

devestation of the riverfront

The riverfront is being denuded at 39 Bonnefin Road Hunters Hill, in contravention of the planning objectives contained in Hunters Hill Council’s DCP 15 and the State Regional Environment Plan (Sydney Harbour Catchment) 2005.

A cursory examination of the DA shows this is not in accordance with the original development approval:

  1. Trees and foliage that were shown on the approved plans to be retained have now been removed. Other trees have huge piles of soil and rock banked up against them and the areas around their root have been compacted by the excavators, severely impacting on their chances of survival.
  2. The retaining wall at the bottom of the site is very different from what is shown on the plans and quite out of character with typical dry stone walls in the area.

Following inquiries from the Trust, Council has requested an investigation of the wall.

It seems this site will never be the same again.

Council needs to take action and consider ways of preventing this level of foreshore destruction happening again.

What you can do:  contact  Hunters Hill Council 9879 9400 or huntershill@nsw.gov.au  to voice your concern.

The riverscape in Bonnefin Road is under pressure from new owners wanting to knock down a number of existing small cottages on the northern side of the street to build large new houses with swimming pools, cabanas and man-made terraces on the waterfront.   The cottage at No 19 has recently been sold to a developer who is already talking about retaining walls on the foreshore and there are a number small cottages in the street that have been left to rack and ruin.   Extensive new work, including a pool, cabana and concrete deck, is currently under construction at No 9A Bonnefin Road.  At present the new work is not particularly visible from the river because of a couple of large trees within the foreshore protection zone.   However the future of these trees is questionable because of retaining walls and drainage works that have been built very close to them.  The immediate neighbours are not so well shielded from the impact of the removal of much of the existing foliage for this development and their existing amenity has been detrimentally affected.

Of course there also remains the threat to the riverscape from the deliberate poisoning and unauthorised removal of existing trees and undergrowth.   I have previously notified Council about such activity in Bonnefin Road but it is clearly too late once the trees have gone and difficult to prosecute when the perpetrator was not caught in the act.
